The dictionary tells us that a Psalm is a sacred song, or lyrical poem used to praise God. Each of the 150 chapters of the Psalms show us the power of prayer, through praise and worship.
Every since I was a child, I have enjoyed reading the Psalms. David prayed from the heart and wasn't shy about asking God for help where he needed it in the different areas of his life. This boldness and depth of his love for God is apparent in his writings. David gave thanks and praise to God. This marvelous book is filled with visions of our Heavenly Father and all of His glory. Psalms 92:1&2- It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing His praises unto thy name,O Most High; To show forth thy loving kindness in the morning and thy faithfulness every night.
When you read the Psalms, you begin to understand that David prayed from the very depth of his soul. Jesus prayed the same way in the garden of Gethsemane. Their words reflect the deep love that they have for God. Words are easy to say, but when they have the power of conviction, and repentance, they touch the heart of God. David wasn't shy about asking God for the things he needed. Why should we be? God is our Father and only wants the best for us. A humble heart, acknowledging that we are sinners, along with praise for God, are truly what the Psalms are about. Psalm 77: 1- I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice, and He gave ear unto me. David praised God and rejoiced in the fact that he had a loving and caring God. He always told God that he was thankful for the answers to his prayers.
Psalm: 51: 1- Have mercy upon me O God; according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. David acknowledged that he was a sinner. He asked God to listen to his prayers, but he always praised God in these prayers. This is one of my favorite Psalms. I think it shows the power of giving honor and glory to our Heavenly Father.
Psalm 91:1&2- He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God, in him will I trust.
When we admit our sins to God and praise Him for His wondrous works, we will be worshipping God in the spirit of the Psalms.
